NPP warns NDC against ‘premature’ economic celebration, calls for long-term assessment

Hajiah Rabi Salifu of the NPP warns that the NDC’s early economic praise is premature, urging Ghanaians to judge performance over time.

The Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Hajiah Rabi Salifu, has cautioned the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) against prematurely hailing economic progress, stressing that Ghanaian voters should evaluate performance over a longer period.

Speaking on GHOne TV with Lily Mohammed on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, Hajiah Rabi referenced the NPP’s economic record between 2017 and 2019, highlighting improvements in inflation and policy implementation.

“Inflation stood at an average of 15.4 percent by the end of 2016 but declined to 12.37 percent in 2017 after the NPP assumed office, and further dropped to single digits, 9.4 percent, in 2018,” she said.

“We had a clear roadmap. We started implementing Free SHS in September 2017 and laid out the policies we were going to roll out.”

Hajiah Rabi argued that while the NDC has pointed to improvements in macroeconomic indicators, one year in office is too short to draw definitive conclusions.

“They were voted to work. What they are doing is not new,” she stated. “Let’s see year two, let’s see year three, let’s see the election year.”

She also highlighted the recent Ayawaso East by-election, noting that the NDC’s vote share reportedly declined from over 70 percent in the 2024 general election to about 63 percent.

“A serious political party that thinks it is on the right path should look at that,” she said, suggesting that the dip reflects underlying dissatisfaction.

On broader economic concerns, Hajiah Rabi cited feedback from her visit to Wulensi, where yam farmers raised challenges regarding market access despite a successful harvest.

“They told me they can only buy yam seeds for now. There is no market for the food stock. How do they go back to the farm?” she questioned.

She further noted that internal tensions within the NDC, which led to an independent candidacy in the by-election, reflect unresolved grievances within the ruling party.

Hajiah Rabi concluded by emphasizing that sustained performance, rather than short-term claims, will ultimately determine public judgment.
