The Head of Corporate Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Naa Atswei Nee Okpey, has called on the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to apologise to Ghanaians for what she described as economic mismanagement during its time in office.
Speaking in an interview with Lily Mohammed on GHOne TV on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, Naa Atswei argued that the NPP’s tenure left the country burdened with high inflation, rising fuel prices, and excessive debt.
She contrasted the previous administration’s record with the current NDC government’s economic gains, insisting that the public deserved acknowledgment of past failings.
“Every opportunity the NPP must take to apologise,” she said, accusing the former government of reckless borrowing and wasteful expenditure.
Naa Atswei highlighted the economic improvements achieved under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, including lower inflation, more affordable fuel, and a stabilised exchange rate. She noted that reductions in levies, such as the e-levy and COVID-related charges, have eased the cost of living for ordinary Ghanaians.
“You were filling your tank with GH¢1,000; today you are doing GH¢600. That is money back into your pocket,” she said.
She further pointed to governance reforms introduced by the Mahama government, including a reduced number of ministers and the implementation of an appointees’ code of conduct, emphasising that public officials must share in both the sacrifices and benefits experienced by citizens.
“If there is any suffering, we all must. If there is any enjoyment, we all must,” she added.
On the political front, Naa Atswei cited the recent Ayawaso East by-election as a reaffirmation of public confidence in the NDC, noting that the result reflected support for both President Mahama and the party’s parliamentary candidate. She also attributed lower voter turnout to Ramadan and Lent, a historical trend for by-elections in Ghana.
“The statement they have made is that President John Dramani Mahama is the president they want, and Baba Jamal is the MP they want,” she said.
Naa Atswei stressed that while the NPP focuses on political criticism, the party must first acknowledge its record and apologise to Ghanaians for the challenges left behind.
