Former National Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Michael Omari Wadie says economic difficulties and voter apathy played a significant role in the party’s defeat.
Speaking on GHOne TV with Lily Mohammed, he defended Former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s legacy while admitting that challenges after 2021 affected public confidence in the government.
“Akufo-Addo did a lot for Ghana, nobody can compare, compete, or deny that,” Omari Wadie stated. However, he noted that no matter how well a leader performs, challenges are inevitable.
“As human beings, no matter how hard you fight for people, you will definitely encounter some challenges. After staying in power for some time, Ghanaians will want you out no matter how good you are.”
He attributed the NPP’s struggles to economic hardships, particularly the rapid depreciation of the cedi in 2021 and 2022.
“The problem started in 2021/2022 when the dollar was around 6 cedis, and within three months, it went to 12 cedis, and it affected everybody. That is what forced him (Akufo-Addo) to go to the IMF,” he explained.
Omari Wadie also pointed out that many NPP supporters chose not to vote in the last election, not because they preferred the opposition but because they were dissatisfied with the situation.
“Most NPP voters did not go to vote. They didn’t like John Mahama but were not happy about what was happening, especially after 2021,” he observed.
