One of the self-confessed killers in the murder of Professor Emmanuel Benneh has told Police they killed the law lecturer after he resisted an attempt to rob him.
According to the police, the 29-year old has changed his earlier confession and has now named a new accomplice.
Director-General of the CID COP Ken Yeboah told the media at a press conference “based on forensic evidence gathered from the crime scene, James Womba was subjected to further integration and he broke down and confessed that he masterminded the murder of the professor.”
“Initially, he mentioned the names of some suspects but he has just changed that assertion and now he has mentioned somebody else. He has admitted that he did commit the crime with another person. And because he had a duplicate key which the professor didn’t know he had access to the place, together with the new person that he has mentioned, he murdered him.”
The CID boss indicted that “the idea was to rob him, but the professor was not giving in as they expected and so he hit him with an iron rod and then tied him, gagged him and then he died. And so the motive as we have gathered so far, robbery. Now he has led us to where he hid and sold some of the items.”
The police CID has dispatched personnel to the crime scene where professor Emmanuel Benneh was murdered.
The senior law lecturer at the University of Ghana faculty of law was found dead at his residence in Adjiringano last month.
An investigation by the police led to the arrest of domestic workers of the deceased.
One of the domestic workers, a cleaner, who is now considered the prime suspect in the case has made fresh revelations in court.
Items stolen
According to COP Ken Yeboah, two phones belonging to the late professor, as well as a Central Processing Unit (CPU) and GH¢450 were taken from Prof Benneh’s house.
