The Ghana Education Service (GES) has warned schools against collecting unauthorized Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) levies, underlining that such practices are not permitted.
In a statement released on Wednesday, October 22, GES stressed that no school may demand PTA or development fees without formal approval from the relevant educational authorities.
“No school has been authorised to collect any PTA or development levy without prior approval. In basic schools, such approval must be granted by the District Education Oversight Committee (DEOC) through the District Director of Education; and in second-cycle schools, by the Regional Director of Education,” the statement noted.
GES emphasised that even when levies are approved, payments are strictly voluntary, and no student should be denied access to school services for non-payment.
The statement singed by Head of Public Relations at GES, Daniel Fenyi, also instructed that heads of schools, teachers, or any staff members must not participate in collecting PTA levies.
“Fundraising activities remain the exclusive responsibility of duly elected PTA Executives,” he added.
Regional and District Directors have been tasked with monitoring compliance and reporting any breaches for immediate disciplinary action, ensuring proper governance of PTA activities and protection of students’ rights.
The directive, GES said, aims to safeguard students while promoting transparency in school fundraising.
